Sunday Morning in Sofia
Call off the search parties. I made it back alive. Found some nice clubs, met some cool people, got home at 4AM and am now in desperate need of some strong black coffee.
There are plenty of hot Bulgarian girls wandering about Sofia on a Saturday night, but they really need to smile more. A note to women of all nationalities. You are all much more beautiful when you smile. You don’t even need a reason. It’s OK to just be happy.
I’ve got to run. Housekeeping wants to make up the room, and I am off in search of caffeine.

Yeah, but some girls who have bad tooth won’t do…

I have some childhood memories from Sofia, though very faint. And I was too young to notice any hot girls.
Maybe the no-smile thing is some kind of test that you have to pass to gain any girl’s trust. Did you try smiling first? Hope something worked.

I never knew you lived in Sofia. You used to really get around.
I think the no-smile thing is just cultural. Once you get to know people, they smile frequently. It’s just that people walk around looking very serious and maintain that posture when talking to people for the first time.

In France, the no-smile posture seems to be a kind of defense. If you are a girl and you smile, you will attract the kind of guys you don’t want to attract more than usual. If you smile, you send a signal of availability and really, you are not available. Ah well, you are, but not for that kind of guys. Actually, I’m pretty sure some guys do the same too: not to shield themselves from women, of course, but from beggars, over-talkative drunk people, and such.
I think that, in Paris, it comes to a point where girls are starting to complain about boys not looking at them as much as they used too.
Might be similar in Sofia.

Philippe,
Yeah, that’s kind of what I figured. The whole thing seems a bit silly though. I actually asked a lot of the Bulgarian girls about the no-smile policy and most said things like “American girls smile too much. We only smile when we really mean it.” So it seems the Bulgarians take their smiling very seriously.
